Steelhead Fishing in Pennsylvania
What are SteelheadsSteelheads are an anadromous strain of rainbow trout, spending most of the life in the ocean or Great Lakes and returning to tributary streams only to spawn. Traditional rainbow trout are landlocked and do not have the opportunity to migrate to different waterways. Identifying a steelhead vs. a rainbow trout is difficult. If you are fishing a tributary of the Great Lakes, you are catching steelheads. The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission stocks yearling and fingerling steelheads each year in Lake Erie tributaries.
Fishing for steelheads revolves around spawning, which takes place from late fall to early spring. Steelheads, unlike salmon which die after spawning, can spawn several years and survive up to 6- to 8-years. They feed on various aquatic insects and other fish species. Fish can be caught on spin or fly tackle on various tackle. Steelhead fishing in Pennsylvania is tough when steelheads are not running in large numbers; however, when they are moving Erie steelhead fishing can become quite congested.
