Bargain Bait Casting Reels

Bait casting reels are getting out of reach for the average angler. By out of reach I mean the price of most bait casting reels are through the roof. Some of these reels cost anywhere from $200-$500. No weekend angler is going to spend that much for a reel that they use a dozen times a year. Even if he uses it every weekend, that’s too much money to put out for a reel. When I was fishing bass tournaments, I probably would have spent that much, because I needed a reel that was smooth, would cast easy and was reliable.  But for the average angler, it’s just not worth the money. Most of these high priced reels are designed for the professional anglers that fish high stakes tournaments, week in and week out. These professionals are sponsored by these reel companies, and are provided reels free of charge. Not that these reels aren't worth the price, because they are, but they are just not practical for the weekend angler. So what is your option?

There are numerous moderately prices reels on the market that we can afford and will work just fine.  Here are just a few reels that the average angler can afford, and should last a really long time. Tackle Warehouse offers most of these reels for great prices.

Lew’s Speed Spool LFs – Gear Ratio’s from 5:6:1 – 7:5:1 – Bearings 9 + 1 - Under $100.

Daiwa Aird – Gear Ratio’s from 6:3:1 – 7:1:1 – Bearings 9 + 1 - $80.

Shimano Curado – Gear Ratio’s 6:3:1 – 7:2:1 – Bearings 5+1 - $180.

Cabela’s Tournament ZX – Gear Ratio’s from 6:3:1 – 7:1:1 – Bearings 9 + 1 - $80.

Towards the top of the price list is the Shimano Curado, which is my choice for a moderately priced bait caster that will perform well and last you a lifetime. I have a few of the older ones and they have never let me down. I believe this reel is the best of the bunch. This Curado casts effortless and operates very smooth. When I leave the house I make sure that my Curado’s are in the boat. What is your favorite bait caster for landing bass?
