Some of the best fishing in Pennsylvania occurs in March and April. As soon as the ice is gone on the river and lakes it is time to bundle up and head to your favorite spot. This is the time of year when you can really catch some quality fish. The fish have gone two or three months with minimal feeding opportunities, and they are ready to eat. Big fish are looking for food first!
One major problem this time of year is keeping warm. The secret is to wear wool clothing and dress in layers. Wool is the warmest of all the clothing out there. There are some great wool clothing made by Cabela’s, WoolX, Minus33 and L.L. Bean, just to name a few. Starting with a thin layer of wool long underwear, followed by a wool shirt, then a wool windproof jacket is all you need. You can also substitute the outer wool jacket with an insulated Gore-Tex coat. Wool Long Jons and wool (or Gore-Tex) pants complete your outfit. Also wool socks with at least 80% wool toped off with water-proof boots.
The hardest thing is keeping your hands warm. The best product out there is the chemical hand warmers. Put a few of them in your outer and inner pockets and your good to go. They will last the entire day but if it is extremely cold put a propane heater strapped to your boat for those extra cold days.
Complete your cold weather outfit with a wool beanie. It will keep your head and ears nice a toasty, ultimately keeping the rest of your body warm. Outfitted in quality wool clothing is the key to cold temperatures on the water and remember always wear your life vest.
The new year brings with it new fishing products to check out. Every angler has their go-to gear whether it is for fly fishing or crappie catching. However, fishing brands are innovating each day and their new products can help you land more fish. Here is some new fishing gear for 2016.
Your boat should have a few things that you just do not leave the dock without. A waterproof plastic ammo box holds all the essential items below and is easily stored on-board. Most of these items you will never need but for that once in a lifetime fishing trip where you do, you will be glad you are prepared.
